Many years ago I found myself wandering around a paddock in North Queensland with an old farmer. He was showing me some of his rusty old machinery lying around the farm., “One day” he was going to restore it all. A small but heavy cast iron machine caught my attention. It was a water pump that was powered by dumping it on the top of a fire - any fire, anywhere. The farmer told me how it worked, but I forgot straight away and spent decades trying to find out again what it was and how it worked. Well now I know. Read the rest of this entry »

Teens in court over shootings ‘targeting Aborigines’
Another three teenagers have appeared in court this morning charged over drive-by shootings in Rockhampton in central Queensland on Australia Day.
At least two children were shot in the back with air rifles in the streets of Rockhampton last Thursday.
Hayden John Nitz, 17, was refused bail on Friday on two counts of wounding, firearms offences and other charges.
The court was told that Nitz and a group of people were driving around Rockhampton on Australia Day with the intention of shooting Aborigines.
Another 17-year-old appeared in court late yesterday and three more this morning.
Timothy John Perry, Shane Matthew McPherson, Scott Henry Warwick-Day and Troy Keith Zornig are facing similar charges to Nitz.
They have been freed on bail.
All five teenagers have been ordered back to court in April.

from ABC Online Govt closes stolen wages fund
Queensland Cabinet will decide later this year what to do with more than $30 million in unclaimed Indigenous wages.
After extending the deadline by a month, the Government today is closing its stolen wages fund.
The $55 million scheme was set up almost three years ago to make payments of $2,000 or $4,000 to Indigenous Queenslanders whose wages were kept by the state.
However, only $17.3 million has been paid to 4,800 claimants.
The minister responsible, John Mickel, says while the scheme closes today, the payments will not be finalised until June.
Cabinet will then decide what to do with the unspent money.
Mr Mickel says it will be used to benefit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queenslanders.
Some Indigenous leaders say the individual payments were too small and many people could not be bothered to claim.

WHY hasn’t Queensland produced an international dance company like Sydney’s Bangarra? Why are there no famous Queensland Aboriginal art movements such as in the Northern Territory and Western Australia? Why does Queensland, the state with the largest Aboriginal population, lag behind in Aboriginal art and culture? Read the rest of this entry »
